Automatic discount not showing on your Shopify product page? Here's why — and 3 ways to fix it
Why it happens
An automatic discount in Shopify (Discounts → Create discount → Automatic discount) is a rule: "20% off this collection", "buy 3, save 10%", "free gift over $50". Shopify checks those rules against the cart. A product page has no cart yet, so most themes simply print the product's price (and its compare-at price, if it has one).
That's why the discount appears correctly in the cart and at checkout, but not on:
- product pages,
- collection and search results,
- quick-view pop-ups and featured-product sections.
Check which of your products are affected
Our free checker opens your store the way a shopper does and asks Shopify for the real checkout price of your products, so you can see at a glance which pages show the full price while a discount is active.

Fix 1 — Use compare-at prices instead (free)
For a simple sale on a fixed set of products, you can skip the automatic discount and change the prices instead:
- Products → select the products → Bulk edit.
- Set Compare-at price to the old price and Price to the sale price.
- Most themes then show the old price struck through and a "Sale" badge everywhere.
Limits (honest):
- You have to change every price back when the sale ends (or your "sale" never ends).
- It can't express quantity deals ("buy 3, save 10%"), buy-X-get-Y, or minimum-order discounts.
- It doesn't help with discounts created by other apps or by Shopify Functions.
- Discount codes then apply on top of the already-lowered price, which may be more than you intended.
Fix 2 — Edit the theme code
A developer can add Liquid or JavaScript to show a sale price. The catch: the theme has to repeat your discount rules (which products, which percentage, which dates, which quantity). Every time you change a discount in Shopify, the theme must be changed too — otherwise the product page and checkout show different prices, which costs more trust than showing no discount at all.
Fix 3 — Use an app that asks Shopify for the price
Several apps in the Shopify App Store display automatic-discount prices on product pages (search "automatic discount display"). When you compare them, check:
- Does the page price always match checkout? The safest apps ask Shopify to calculate the price instead of re-implementing your rules.
- Quantity deals: can it show "Buy 3, pay $X each"?
- Your theme: read reviews from stores on the same theme.
- Speed: it should load after the page, without slowing it down.
If you'd rather not edit prices or theme code, we've also made a small app for this — Pricelight: Discount Display. It works like the free checker above: Shopify calculates the price, so your product page matches checkout. There's a free plan (Pro is US$4.99/month), and it's currently in Shopify App Store review. It's ours, so please compare it with the other apps too.
FAQ
Will Shopify add this natively?
Shopify changes quickly, so check your theme's latest version and the Shopify changelog. As of this guide, most themes still show only the product price and compare-at price on product pages.
Does the cart page show the discount?
Yes. Once an item is in the cart, Shopify applies the automatic discount and most cart pages show it.
Can I check a password-protected store?
No — the checker only sees what a shopper can see. Remove the password (or test on a live store) first.
