Show automatic discounts on product pages without editing your prices
Short answer: many ways of showing a sale price work by changing your product or compare-at prices. That can cause double discounts at checkout, or prices left wrong after the sale ends or an app is removed. A safer approach reads the real checkout price from Shopify and shows it, without touching your products.
Two approaches
Editing prices (compare-at or scheduled price changes)
- Works on any theme.
- Risk of double discounts if an automatic discount also applies.
- Prices must be changed back, by hand or by an app, when the sale ends.
Reading the real checkout price
- Your products are never changed, so removing the tool leaves the store as it was.
- Shows exactly what checkout will charge, including "buy 3, save more" deals.
- Needs a small script on the storefront.
Questions to ask before you pick a tool
- Does it change my product or compare-at prices?
- What happens to my prices if I uninstall it?
- Does it show quantity deals and stacked discounts correctly?
- Does it still work if I change my theme?
Honest limits
Discount codes can't be shown in advance, because they depend on the code a shopper types. Only automatic discounts can be shown this way. Our app, Pricelight, takes the "read the real price" approach; it's new and so far tested mainly on Shopify's Dawn theme.
